Danial Whitaker

Success Story

From Spencer, Indiana, 43-year-old Danial “DJ” Whitaker is a father of two who enjoys hunting and fishing. His life recently took an unexpected turn when a wound on his foot, a complication from diabetes, became infected. The infection escalated, which resulted in a below knee amputation of his left leg.

Determined to regain his independence, DJ chose nearby Bloomington Regional Rehabilitation Hospital (BRRH) for specialized rehabilitative care. DJ’s recovery goals included returning to simple activities of daily living—showering independently and using the bathroom without assistance.

DJ worked with the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team who created a personalized treatment plan for him to help him reach his goals. As he progressed through therapy, DJ eventually learned to shower independently and was able to hop up on a six-inch step.

Reflecting on his experience, DJ expressed his appreciation, “All the staff has been nice and helpful,” he says. “If I ever need therapy again, I’ll come back without a second thought.”

After 16 days at BRRH, DJ has been discharged home and is looking forward to rejoining his children and experiencing independence once again.
