Dennis Martin
Success Story
Seventy-three-year-old Dennis Martin from Ellettsville, Indiana, has been married to his wife, Diana, for 49 years. They have three children and many grandchildren, who he enjoys spending time with when not traveling, working outdoors, and playing tennis or pickleball.
Dennis’ activities were recently brought to a halt after suffering from a second stroke within two months. Along with a severe headache and face numbness, Dennis did not have any feeling in his arm or leg after the second incident. He was taken by ambulance to an acute care hospital where he spent a week before being referred to Bloomington Regional Rehabilitation Hospital (BRRH) for his rehabilitative care.
When he arrived, Dennis felt hopeless, dizzy, nauseous, and depressed. His goal was to gain balance on the left side of his body so he could return to his normal activities.
Dennis feels he is making progress every day. “I feel stronger, I walk better, and I feel my balance returning to normal,” he says. “The patient care technician, nurse, and dietitian encouraged me every day.”
After 22 days at BRRH, Dennis was able to return home. He says he’s looking forward to traveling with his wife and enjoying his family. “Diana has been my rock through this medical emergency,” he says. “I’m fortunate to have had support from her and my extended family.”
Dennis says he is impressed with the top-notch therapy department at BRRH and how everyone works together to get the best results from their patients. He hopes to return one day, but only for a visit because he “feels so much love here at BRRH.”
